Miles for Mitchell 5 K Race 4.23.16

Saturday:  We went to the Miles for Mitchell 3K Race out in Herriman.  It was cold and a little windy but we were glad it wasn’t raining.  Michelle and Taylor (in a stroller) ran with Glen’s Family.  I stayed in the car most of the time with Danielle so that she wouldn’t catch a cold.  They gave each of the boys with DMD a basket full of probably a $100 worth of gifts.  Mitchell loved that his had some Legos in them.

One family has 3 boys in it with DMD.  They are all under 6 right now and can still walk but their future is very bleak.

Stacy has hurt her back by lifting Mitchell,  She is slowly getting better.  They have to have a lift to help Mitchell get out of bed, use the restroom and take a bath.  It is attached to the bathroom and bedroom and has three different tracks that it can go on.  They had to take out the wall or parts of it from his bedroom to the bathroom.   They had to replace their lift in the garage because it was breaking down too often and would leave them no way to get 500 pounds to school  (the electric wheelchair is very heavy!  They had a permanent wood ramp put in that wil;l not break as the electric wheelchair can climb it easily.
Mitchell is doing well in school and scouting and his duties as a deacon.  He tries to be cheerful!  Owen is such a good brother to him as well as Olivia!

Windy and threatened rain yet we were blessed!

It was cold and blustry the night before and we worried we would be rained (even snowed) out. Fortunately the heavens were kind and the skies broke. This was what the valley looked like the morning of the run. — in Herriman, Utah.

They're off!

This is Team Mitchell

Taylor and Michelle completed the race.
Taylor did well except when they passed playgrounds and he wanted to get out and swing.

Glen & Stacy's Family

They have a virtual run all over the world!

Mitchell received a very nice basket of gifts.  He said he likes the Legos the best!

WE'RE JUST WALKING EACH OTHER HOME
There is no single photo that encapsulates what happened today at our Miles for Mitchell run. We were humbled by everyone's support and loving encouragement. Though we run in honor of Mitch, we also run in hope for other boys with DMD. Today we had 11 children, each with DMD, attend. Each child left knowing they were loved by a growing community who cares and wants to help.
In this photo, Natalie talks with a dear friend of hers, Stacy, who also has a son with DMD. Our little Mitchell was friends with her son, who is also named Mitchell. Two DMD mothers who love their sons and carry uniquely heavy burdens, yet they set their sorrows aside to love and support each other.
As I attended the funeral of my beautiful Aunt earlier this week, a woman who loved little Mitch and was there to support him during special times in his life, I discovered that she often said of life, "We're just walking each other home."
May we walk each other home with helping hands and loving hearts.  By Chris Jones
