Talk by Elder Bednar

This is a talk that we have been listening to and found interesting.
Elder Bednar talks of weapons of rebellion.  Today we don't think of us as having possession of weapons but we do have invisible weapons of rebellion!

Spring Pics James and Michelle's Family on 4.24.16

James and Michelle and kids came over and we took a few pics in their spring outfits.  The lilacs were blooming and it was a beautiful spring day!

This is my favorite family pic.

 We were battling the evening sun and it was rather harsh in some of the pics but this was good!!!

They are cute together!

This is a fun one!

Taylor likes to smell and taste things.  He liked the smell of the liliacs,
The other day we were pulling weeds in the yard.  He would put the bloom of the yarrow in his mouth and try to eat them.  He thought they were white broccoli.  It's hard being a kid and learning what you can and cannot eat!

Michelle & Danielle who will be 4 months old tomorrow!

Miles for Mitchell 5 K Race 4.23.16

Saturday:  We went to the Miles for Mitchell 3K Race out in Herriman.  It was cold and a little windy but we were glad it wasn’t raining.  Michelle and Taylor (in a stroller) ran with Glen’s Family.  I stayed in the car most of the time with Danielle so that she wouldn’t catch a cold.  They gave each of the boys with DMD a basket full of probably a $100 worth of gifts.  Mitchell loved that his had some Legos in them.

One family has 3 boys in it with DMD.  They are all under 6 right now and can still walk but their future is very bleak.

Stacy has hurt her back by lifting Mitchell,  She is slowly getting better.  They have to have a lift to help Mitchell get out of bed, use the restroom and take a bath.  It is attached to the bathroom and bedroom and has three different tracks that it can go on.  They had to take out the wall or parts of it from his bedroom to the bathroom.   They had to replace their lift in the garage because it was breaking down too often and would leave them no way to get 500 pounds to school  (the electric wheelchair is very heavy!  They had a permanent wood ramp put in that wil;l not break as the electric wheelchair can climb it easily.
Mitchell is doing well in school and scouting and his duties as a deacon.  He tries to be cheerful!  Owen is such a good brother to him as well as Olivia!

Windy and threatened rain yet we were blessed!

It was cold and blustry the night before and we worried we would be rained (even snowed) out. Fortunately the heavens were kind and the skies broke. This was what the valley looked like the morning of the run. — in Herriman, Utah.

9:00 am

They're off!

This is Team Mitchell

Taylor and Michelle completed the race.
Taylor did well except when they passed playgrounds and he wanted to get out and swing.

Glen & Stacy's Family

They have a virtual run all over the world!

Mitchell received a very nice basket of gifts.  He said he likes the Legos the best!

WE'RE JUST WALKING EACH OTHER HOME
There is no single photo that encapsulates what happened today at our Miles for Mitchell run. We were humbled by everyone's support and loving encouragement. Though we run in honor of Mitch, we also run in hope for other boys with DMD. Today we had 11 children, each with DMD, attend. Each child left knowing they were loved by a growing community who cares and wants to help.
In this photo, Natalie talks with a dear friend of hers, Stacy, who also has a son with DMD. Our little Mitchell was friends with her son, who is also named Mitchell. Two DMD mothers who love their sons and carry uniquely heavy burdens, yet they set their sorrows aside to love and support each other.
As I attended the funeral of my beautiful Aunt earlier this week, a woman who loved little Mitch and was there to support him during special times in his life, I discovered that she often said of life, "We're just walking each other home."
May we walk each other home with helping hands and loving hearts.  By Chris Jones

28 Star Valley Temple in Afton, Wyoming April 19, 2016

Back during the cold war era, my Mom bought 133 acres of BLM ground with the idea that if we ever had to exit our home in Utah that we could come here and survive.  The Bagleys (neighbors and good friends on the Uintah Bench)  also bought a large amount of land.  After Red died they sold their property,  We still own the land and are looking for a buyer.

We have always hard a place in our hearts for Star Valley.  Our Mom (Inez) loved it so.Our family almost moved there once to Afton to buy a hotel and restaurant.  It still stands but is very old now.
Larry and Inez would go up to the property to mend fences and really enjoyed being there!  They would take his boys and Joyce and Muriel.  I was married and living in West Valley by then.

This is right on the main street of Afton, Wyoming
Little did we know that they were going to install the Angel Moroni on Monday.
We were there on the Tuesday before!

It is just inside the city limits in the south side of Afton.
They are doing the landscaping now and will have an Open House in September.

This is taken from the Stake Center parking lot about a block to the south.

We stopped in to visit with Ron (a local) who owns LDS Home Decor.  They have some beautiful fine wood products.  He says that now it takes all day to go to the temple because they have to drive either to Logan or to Idaho Falls.  Each temple takes about the same amount of time.
Now it will be minutes away!  What a blessing to so many!!!

Family Proclamation

It's been 21 years since this was issued in Sept. 1995!

It was true then and even more needed now!

27 Soda Springs Jaunt April 18, 19 and 20, 2016

Sunday:  Grandpa helped with the In-Service Lesson for the ward.  Teachers from all auxillaries were invited to a 7:00 meeting.  At first they said take about 10 minutes and then the day of he said the others had flaked out so could he take about 30.  He was talking about the on-line resources from LDS.org.  It all went well enough.  He was prepared and tried to go with the flow.  There were about a dozen people there.

Monday:  We took off for Soda Springs, Idaho because Grandpa has always wanted to go there.  We went up through Logan and ate a late lunch at our favorite place, Angies Restaurant.  Then north to Preston.  We stopped at the city cemetary where Grandpa Glen Jacobs (MJ's dad) is buried.  It has been 25 years ago.  Left a littlke something at his graveside.  It is very peaceful and quiet there.   Then we turned northeast. Soda Springs, Id. is where they were drilling for a warm springs and instead found a springs that had carbonated water in it.  They just let it run for days on end and eventually the Dept. of the Interior said they needed to cap it because it was affecting the water supply of Old Faithful.  So they capped it and set it on a timer and it goes off every hour on the hour 24/7. Our car in the parking lot got mineral spots on it from it blowing with the wind.   It is close to the middle of the town and shoots up about 100 feet in the air:

Walk way to the observation point.

Observation point above the capped pipe.

There are springs out of town where you can taste the water.
It is kind of yucky but we tasted it anyway.

This area has historical significance because it is where the people on the Oregon Trail either went north west to Oregon or split off and turned southwest down to California.  We stopped and read every historical marker and went to every site we could find!

Tuesday: We drove up to Afton, Wyoming where the Star Valley Temple is under construction.  They are in the landscaping phase and will be ready for an Open House in September.  It is a very small temple about the size of a stake center.  The stake center is close but about a block away.  It is in more of a business area, on the main street, south side of the town, but can be easily seen.  There is a small Shopko about a mile to the north.  I imagine houses will start to be built close to it.

Had we known, we would have waited a week because we read that they were putting the Angel Moroni on TODAY!  We were remembering happening on to them putting the Angel Moroni on the Draper Temple.  That was at least 10 years ago.  That was very special!  We were with Shelby.  If we can find the pic from back then we will post it.

Wednesday: Returned home by way of Montpelier, ID, Bear Lake and Logan Canyon.  Bear Lake is beautiful as always!  Of course we had to stop and get a little ice cream at the Aggie Store and then spent some time resting at the 1st reservor:

We remembered about our year that we lived in Logan when Glen was just a toddler. We enjoyed it very much and think it is a great place to live.  Glen, Julie and James have all attended USU and both David and I got our Master's Degrees from there.

It is always a good feeling when you come home into the SL Valley!  Home is home!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
We want to take a few road trips while we can before the kids get out of school.  Things are a lot less crowded that way, the weather is nice and the evenings are cool.  By and large is easiest to take the van and stay in a motel where it is easy to get electricity for his oxygen and bi-pap machine.  We can lock the machine in the bathtub and shut the door so that it is not so noisy!
It is getting harder and harder to be away from home for very long with all of David's diet restrictions.  As bad as diabetes is (he's had it for 25 to 30 yrs.)  The other diets for low sodium and kidney diet are a lot harder to control.  The salt really gets to him when you eat out.  Because his kidneys are not working well, the fluid builds up on his legs.  Sometimes he can't hardly get his pant legs down.  So we only eat out l meal a day and pick very carefully a klower sodium meal usually a salad with a meat that we can request it not be salted.  Then we choose very carefully from the grocery store.  He cannot have any luncheon meats not even the turkey because of the high sodium content.  Fresh veggies and a few vegetables work well.
We never know when our last road trip will be out last!  When he goes on kidney dialysis he will have to stay pretty much 24 hrs. from home.  He will be on dialysis 3 days a week for 4 hours a day.  I tell him to think of it as a part-time job, without a paycheck, where he can just sit and read!
26 Flooding in Texas Houston Temple is Safe!
Week of April 18
We have been interested in the news about the flooding in Texas probably because of our trip to Texas last fall.  We are grateful that the temple has been protected.  Here are some of the news events we have been reading.
Flooding Around the Houston, Temple
Houston Temple
Recent flooding in the Houston-area has killed eight people, flooded 1,000 homes, and caused more than $5 billion in damage according to CNN.
New video and pictures show flooding near the temple for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Houston.
The pictures, found on ldsliving.com, show the temple seems to be untouched by the flooding.
In a post on the Friends of Houston Texas South Stake Facebook page photographer Robert Boyd (temple worker and professional photographer) captured the water surrounding temple grounds.
The post declared, "The temple itself stands safe and secure at least 8 feet above the water line. It is a wonderful sight to behold! We think it is a strikingly beautiful image and reflection as captured in the special photo attached, produced by one of our wonderful ordinance workers, Bob Boyd. Thank you Brother Boyd!"
The temple will continue to be closed - see letter from temple presidency below.
Dear Brothers and Sisters,
We extend our deepest love and gratitude to you all for your faithful and devoted service in this special and holy place, the Houston Temple.We know that many of you and your co-workers have expressed concern and interest in the status of the temple in light of the serious flooding that has occurred along the Cypress Creek water shed. Access to the temple from virtually every direction is impassible; all of the parking areas on the grounds are at least partially flooded; and we have continued concern about the ancillary building.
The temple itself stands safe and secure at least 8 feet above the water line. It is a wonderful sight to behold! We think it is a strikingly beautiful image and reflection as captured in the special photo attached, produced by one of our wonderful ordinance workers, Bob Boyd. Thank you Brother Boyd!
According to our best projections, it appears highly unlikely that we will be able to re-open the temple before Friday. Water levels will remain high through mid-day tomorrow. We do not anticipate access to the temple before Thursday at the earliest; and even then, will require clean-up and preparation efforts.
We would ask that you share this information with the temple workers on your respective shifts that the temple will not be open either Wednesday or Thursday of this week.
Attached are a couple of photos taken earlier today of the temple. We hope that the "creek doesn't rise" any further!
In deepest gratitude for your patience, service, understanding and leadership. You are in our prayers. We know there are some of you who are suffering from losses associated with this devastating flood event. In addition to help and service through your Priesthood leaders, please let us know of opportunities to reach out to any who have been affected.
Houston Temple Presidency,
Marshal W. Hayes
Albert E. Haines
Great story. When the temple was in the planning stages there was a heavy rain and runoff/flooding from the nearby Cypress Creek. The decision was made to raise the temple 8 feet higher than originally planned to protect it from potential flooding. Such a wise/inspired decision.
This message is from President Hruska:
Dear Brothers and Sisters,
We hope you are safe and your homes did not experience any damage from last night's storm. If you did receive damage, please make sure to contact your home teachers or priesthood leaders for assistance. We are continual praying for your wellbeing and safety. These past few days of inclement weather have effected many in our cities and there is much opportunity for us to show Christ-like love. I'd like to tell you of one opportunity our missionaries just had this past weekend.
A tornado hit a Houston apartment complex on Sunday morning, making 252 units uninhabitable. The city organized disaster relief efforts, but had trouble communicating with the residents who mostly only spoke Spanish.
Yesterday the city asked if our missionaries could help in the disaster relief efforts. A total of 31 missionaries spent the day translating for the residents and city officials including the mayor and a US Congressman, helping families pack and move out of the complex, and hand out assistant informational flyers to residents. With the missionaries help, things went smoothly today, and many were able to get to know our missionaries.
In a news conference, Mayor Parker publicly thanked the LDS Church for its assistance. The Church was mentioned in the in several media outlets.
The missionaries' efforts have accomplished a lot to change perceptions of the Church and its missionary program. Because of the publicity received, many of our non-member friends and neighbors will hear about our missionaries' service in a very positive light.
I invite you to take the missionaries to your neighbors homes, introduce them, and tell them that they are here to serve and invite them to call the missionaries if they ever need help. The missionaries cannot and will not accept payment for their services, and are not there to proselyte. We simply want to give Christ-like service.
Our experience is that this type of service to individuals and families softens hearts, changes perceptions of the Church and the missionaries, and often leads to inquiries about the gospel.
Thank you for all that you do to move the work forward. We love you and pray for you.
President David Hruska
